A certificate on its own does not create an income. ADAM’s livelihoods work runs the full chain: choose a trade the local market actually pays for, train to a real standard, hand over the tools, and stay in contact until the first earnings arrive.

Why this matters

Minority communities in Somaliland have historically been confined to a narrow set of occupations, and young people who want to move beyond them face both a skills gap and a hiring gap. Vocational training is the fastest route out — but only if the trade is in demand, the training is hands-on, and the graduate leaves with the equipment to start work the same week.

What we do

• Technical and vocational training (TVET) in welding, auto mechanics, electrical work, construction and metal fabrication.
• Tailoring, garment-making and handicraft training, with a strong focus on women trainees.
• Business and financial literacy training for first-time traders and micro-entrepreneurs.
• Toolkits and start-up equipment — sewing machines, welding sets, safety gear — issued on graduation.
• Small business and livestock grants for households building an independent income.
• Job placement, apprenticeship links and follow-up mentoring with local employers.

How we work

Trades are selected from what employers and markets in each town are actually hiring for, not from a fixed curriculum. Training is delivered with certified instructors and recognised certification so graduates can prove their skill, and every cohort is followed after graduation to see whether the training turned into work.
