Programme 06 of 10
Social Inclusion & Community Integration
Breaking down the stereotypes that keep communities apart.
Consultation
Structured meetings on inclusive participation in services.
Representation
Minority voices seated in local committees and planning.
Contact
Joint activities that reduce distance between communities.
Discrimination in Somaliland is sustained less by law than by inherited social attitudes: assumptions about who may marry whom, who may hold which job, who belongs where. ADAM’s inclusion work targets those attitudes directly, and pushes for minority representation in the institutions that decide.
Why this matters
Persistent stereotypes push minority communities out of social life, out of intermarriage, out of certain professions and out of decision-making. These are not abstract harms — they determine whether a qualified graduate is hired, whether a family can rent a house in a given neighbourhood, and whether a community’s needs appear in a district plan.
What we do
- Community consultation meetings on minority-inclusive participation in public life.
- Dialogue between minority and majority community leaders, elders and religious figures.
- Advocacy for minority inclusion in social service delivery and district planning.
- Support for minority representation in local committees, associations and institutions.
- Joint activities — training, sport, cultural events — that build contact across community lines.
- Work with women and youth as the fastest-moving constituency for changing attitudes.
How we work
Inclusion cannot be delivered to a community from outside it. ADAM convenes both sides, keeps the conversation practical — a hiring practice, a service queue, a committee seat — and follows up on the specific commitments made in the room.
